Giornata Mondiale dell'Acquerello / World Day of Watercolor

Demonstration by David Chauvin
Within of the World Day of Watercolor organized by the A.I.A. (Italian Association of Watercolorists), I attended a demonstration of the French painter David Chauvin. His technique is quite different from the one I generally use and is based mainly on painting "wet on wet". Before starting to paint,  David wets the sheet from both sides with a very large amount of water. Basically, the sheet remains wet / damp for almost all the time necessary to complete the watercolor. His technique has intrigued me, and a few days ago, I tried to paint more or less the same subject proposed by David.
What you see on the left is the result of my experiment.

  2. I like what I see from your version. I find it very beautiful the seemingly muddy effect of your colors. I cannot compare your work to David's work because I cannot see clearly his version from the picture. I hope you will try more this technique. I think in this technique, the kind of paper to use also matter. Anyway, I really love this one.

  5. Great experiment, lovely painting. It is nice to try a different technique sometimes. I do that on occasion, but I always find myself going back to my comfort zone (my own style) :)

    Buen trabajo.

  15. Interesting result with just wet-in-wet. I wonder how you got the straight edges, maybe some scratching? Really nice light!

  21. Your sunrises and sunsets in the new post are gorgeous, Tito. You have such a way with lighting the sky in different moods that accentuate the scenery below. Very beautiful and expressive. I really like your version of the scene from the workshop! It has your own style to it, with the lighting and the blend of colors. Do you think you will do more pieces with the wet technique?

    1. Thanks Katherine, I will certainly use again the wet on wet technique. The real difference respect to how David works, consists in the fact that I use in my watercolors this technique partially, while David uses it from beginning to the end of the painting.
